7 lessons for your career

7 lessons for your career

1/ If people can't trust you, it doesn't matter how smart you are.

2/ Write your emails assuming everybody will read them.

3/ Don't be in a hurry to create impact. Be in a hurry to learn.

4/ Early in your career, pick a job where you learn the most, regardless of the money. Learning compounds faster than money!

5/ Never trust your memory. Write everything down.

6/ A great way to set yourself up for success is to do more after you are finished doing what you were told to do. Become positively unpredictable.

7/ Early in your career, you get paid for what you can do. Later on, you get paid for what you know.

Bonus: In the end, every role boils down to how you deal with people.

Book I am reading this week

Finished reading Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up and would genuinely love for every parent to read it. Please.

Started reading a very interesting book by Neerja Chowdhury - How Prime Ministers Decide.

It's a gripping narration of 6 key decisions taken by former Prime Ministers that went on to define the country in meaningful ways, and what went behind the scenes preceding the decision. I am quite enjoying the book - I rarely like such political non-fiction but this one is well-written and well-crafted.

My new book, MAKE EPIC MONEY, is now a national bestseller, having sold 115,000+ copies.

Here is a list of all the books I have shared in this newsletter so far (in alphabetical order).

Results of last week's survey

Which social media platform do you use the most, from these?

  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • Twitter/X
  • LinkedIn
  • Discord
  • Don't use social media much

Here are the results:

Observations:

  • YT is the winner for the young and the elderly. IG is for the cool kids, haha!
  • LinkedIn gains prominence with age, as expected.
  • Twitter/X peaks in the 30s.
  • Discord is only for the young.
  • Around 10% don't use social media much - shabaash!

My answer:
Twitter is where I spend my max time. Around 1hr/day. Total phone usage is around 3hrs/day.

Quotes to share

The secret sauce for productivity isn't more hours; it's intentional rest.

There's no such thing as "I can't".
Either you don't want to. Or you need help.

Early in your career, you get paid for what you can do.
Later on, you get paid for what you know.

📸 My week, in pictures

In this section, I share my week in pictures, for those who do not like to read as much as I write :))
I do so not to show how cool a life I live, but instead to show you what are the highlights of every day. As you will see over time, my days are mostly in repeat mode - the same things, but different experiences from them.

From my colour painting class. Which one is better? :))

Full moon night. This is at 5 am :))

Was in Chennai last week. This 16-year-old Samyak Jain presented this awesome Rubik's cube portrait. Such talent!

Addressed the FICCI Flo Chennai chapter - super high energy!

This is from our 6-year-old's class. What amazing ideas from Class 1 students. Unfortunately, this ambition, audacity, and curiosity will go down as they grow up :((

This Saturday, went to Old Delhi for a walk around Kabootar Baazi (Pigeon Flying). Unreal experience.

The charm of Old Delhi remains unmatched!

That's it for the week in pictures. Have a lovely weekend and week ahead, all of you lovelies :)))

My marks didn't define me The Class 12th CBSE Board results were announced this week. And every year, this time around, I recall my 12th Class mark sheet. I was really good at Maths and Physics. And I didn't score as much as I thought I would. I was one of the school toppers in English. And scored one of the lowest in school. Chemistry was my weakest subject and I scored the highest. I laugh at these scores today. Actually, I laugh at how I reacted that day. I was sad, and I was also mad. I...

I got lucky! 6 things that I believe defined 99% of where I am in life today. 1/ I was born male. 2/ I was born fair-skinned.3/ I was born to parents who went to college. 4/ I was sent to an English medium school.5/ I was raised in a big city (Delhi).6/ I was born in a Hindu Brahmin family. Think about it. I had nothing to do with any of these 6 things - and yet, in the time and era that I was born in, these 6 things set me up in massive ways. It would be pompous for me to think that it was...

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...
