Are you acting?

I meant action!

Just spoke to my mentee.
Early 20s.
Bright student.
Worked 4 years in a challenging but intellectually stimulating environment.
Quit to take a break.
4 months into it.
Now, not doing so well.
Finds it hard to take action.
Binge watches.
“I think I romanticized the idea of a break.”

These were my exact words to him:
“I am not an expert, so most of what I share comes from secondary research, and not primary experience or agency.
Your mind is currently your enemy.
It ruminates and thinks of everything possible.
What went wrong?
What could go wrong?
It tricks you into believing that you need to take your next step very cautiously.
Because what if the next step too goes wrong?

You are in a state of constant mental activity, but no action.
You need to convert that into a state of action.
Not perfect action.
Just action."

Here is what I would do:

1. Get my blood test done.
Find my deficiencies.
And through diet and supplements, fill those.
Very often, it is simple Vitamin D/B12 deficiency that makes us lethargic.

2. Remove all options in life.
No savings, no family, or friends.
You have 2 months and assume all your money and network runs out.
Put yourself into a spot where your mind isn’t thinking, “Oh I have time, let’s take more time.”
It should be thinking, “There is no time to think. Just act.”

3. Every day - just act.
Start working out.
Start walking.
Start stepping out.
Take decisions within 5 seconds.
Even if they're wrong.
The ones that go really wrong, you will spend time correcting them.
You will be intellectually busy.
Get intellectually busy!

4. Delete all apps that numb you.
They are not your friends.
They are simply entertaining you; not educating you.
When you feel withdrawn, go for a walk.

The only thing that makes humans feel alive is a sense of action; a sense of progress.
Get out of your head.
And act!

Book I am reading this week

Started reading The Money Trap: Grand Fortunes and Lost Illusions Inside the Tech Bubble by Alok Sama.

This is a real-life account of what happened at Softbank during the tenure of Alok as its CFO. Fascinating, almost unbelievable narrative of Masa San (Masayoshi - the founder of Softbank), who wishes to be remembered as the crazy guy who bet on the future.
If you like tech, if you like non-fiction, if you like biographies - this one is for you.

My 3rd book, Make Epic Money, has sold 1,26,000+ copies in India with a 4.4+ rating. You can buy it in Hindi, English, Marathi, Audio, and Kindle here.
The book has also been converted into a video course (in Hindi and English) - that you can check out here.

Here is an alphabetical list of all books I have shared in this newsletter so far.

Question of the week

If you are an Indian, are you proud to be an Indian?

  • Extremely proud
  • Somewhat proud
  • Indifferent
  • Not so proud
  • Not proud at all
  • Not an Indian

(and see the results of others, too)

Results of last week's question

At a younger age, night times are most productive. Then, it shifts to mornings.
Notice how "All the time" and "Never" both peak during the younger days and then plummet. As you grow, you realize no one is always/never productive, haha.

My response?
My most productive time is early morning. Love my routine.

3-2-1

3 pics from last week

Met my Bangalore team members last week.
From L-R: Bhavya (Curriculum Designer), me, Surabhi (Operations manager), Amarjeet (Full-stack developer).

Love wearing kurta, especially black ones.
This one is designed and tailored by Abhinav&Sunny (Sunny is Ruchi's cousin and a really accomplished designer).

Was in Dubai yesterday for a course shoot on Personal Branding. This is the entire production crew - a bunch of super-committed individuals!

2 quotes I wish to share

Don't pick up a book to escape from your world.
Pick it up to understand your world.

The right partner will never stop you from growing.
The right manager will never stop you from growing.
The right friends will never stop you from growing.
In fact, they will be the reason why you will grow.

1 new thing I learnt this week

Fun fact: India is ranked third in the world when it comes to average baths/showers per person per week.
#1 is Brazil at 12/person/week, followed by Japan at 11 and India at 10.
The US is ranked 11th at 5/person/week!
I am judging every country below that, haha!

PS: Banana is the most sold item at Walmart - a lot of you got it right :)

I studied in Gujarat I was sitting next to a young, sharply dressed guy on an early flight to Mumbai. Calmly opened his laptop as the seat belt sign went off, working on what looked like a complicated Excel sheet. Worked through the flight. After 1.5 hours, as the hostess walked the aisle requesting to place your seats upright, he shut down the laptop and gave me a “I think I am ready” look. Good thing the middle seat was empty. We got talking. I presumed he was preparing for an important...

Difficult relationships I was speaking to a friend caught in a difficult relationship. - Witnessing a different side of his partner.- Incessant fights.- Frustrated that she doesn’t see what’s wrong with her.- Shocked and surprised that she feels he is wrong. Here is exactly what I told him: There are three reactions to a difficult relationship 1/ I don’t want this drama in my life. I shouldn’t have to deal with this. I can no longer take this. I am out! 2/ I love you. I realize that your...

10 job mistakes I made 1: I assumed fast = smart.I thought being super-fast at work made me a genius. Nah. We’re not paid to get things done fast. We’re paid to get things done right. 2: I thought identifying errors in my work was my manager’s job.No! If your manager has to spot your errors, they are doing your work. Not theirs. If your manager can’t trust you, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. 3: I waited for feedback.I assumed if my manager had something to say, they’d let me...
