8 things that parents kill within us

Published 3 months ago • 4 min read

8 things that parents kill within their kids

1/ Kids are born with no other fear except that of falling. Every other fear, they learn while living.
As parents, we are largely guilty of instilling those fears in them.
Parents kill their fearlessness.

2/ They are born with the ability to immerse themselves.
In play.
And focus is a superpower today!
As parents, we disturb this immersion, by asking them to now eat, poop, bathe, study, and go for classes. If only we allowed this immersion to continue.
Parents kill their focus.

3/ They are naturally born curious.
And curiosity can be killed.
By repeating, “It's like this only.”
Give them the freedom to discover. Even if the answer will leave them disturbed.
Parents kill their curiosity.

4/ If something goes wrong, we ask questions starting with why.
"Why did you do this?"
"Why did this happen?"
"Why are you always like this?"
We accuse them.
We make them feel bad about mistakes they made that we could have made too.
So they lie to us.
Parents kill honesty.

5/ To kids, everyone is equal.
And everyone is a friend.
And then slowly, we teach them to differentiate.
Based on money, colour, religion, and nationality.
How we deal with people is how our kids learn to differentiate between people.
Parents kill equality.

6/ They express themselves.
They kiss, they hug, and they snuggle.
But they don't see us do so.
So they grow up to not do them as much.
Parents kill expression.

7/ The most real definition of love is developed by observing how we, as parents, love our partner.
But they often do not see love.
They do not see respect.
They do not see trust.
Parents kill love.

8/ Kids want to experience the world in its true, raw form.
Playing with dirt, falling over, singing aloud, bumping into people, and making mistakes.
We tame them.
Parents kill freedom.

Often, the best gift you can give your kids as a parent is to not be a parent!

Book I am reading this week

Still reading the same book
The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read (and Your Children Will Be Glad That You Did).
It is actually a VERY good read. Highly recommended.
Not just for parents.

My new book, MAKE EPIC MONEY, is now released. You can buy the English or Hindi print version, the Kindle version, or the audiobook version.
60,000+ copies already sold - making it the third consecutive bestseller, yay :))))

Here is a list of all the books I have shared in this newsletter so far (alphabetical order)

Results of last week's survey

Last week, I asked:

Who are you closer to?
I know, I know — it's hard to choose. But you have to choose. Won't share it with them, promise haha :))

  • I am a man; closer to father
  • I am a man; closer to mother
  • I am a woman; closer to mother
  • I am a woman; closer to father
  • Close to neither

Here are the results:

Observations:

  • Let's start with the gender ratio. On average, 42% women and 58% men. So pretty decent!
  • For women, mothers are who they seem to be the closest to, unlike the popular perception that daughters are closer to their fathers.
  • For men, the share of them closer to mothers is higher - agreed!
  • What's super interesting is the sharp drop between 23-30 yrs towards fathers and a sharp increase toward mothers. My understanding is that these are the first working years and fathers are usually absent during this period. Plus, most kids would be away from home. So they miss their mothers the most.

My answer?
I am closer to my mother, but I have certainly gotten much much closer to my father than I was in the past.

Quotes to share

It's far easier to experience hardship than to teach it.

“Quit your job to follow your passion” is inarguably the worst piece of advice one can actually act upon.

Often, the best gift you can give your kids as a parent is not to be a parent!

📸 My week, in pictures

In this section, I share my week in pictures, for those who do not like to read as much as I write :))
I do so not to show how cool a life I live, but instead to show you what are the highlights of every day. As you will see over time, my days are mostly in repeat mode - the same things, but different experiences from them.

My new class on watercolor painting is coming along well :)))

Working at airports is always so productive - I feel the pressure of completing the task at hand before the flight takes off, haha!

Random pic...

More than me, our 12-year-old son, Vidur, is super excited to have these. This is a chocolate brand named Feastables, launched by Mr. Beast.

Running such a library would be WOW!! Dream!
One day :)))

First reviews coming in for Make Epic Money :))

Such a surreal feeling to see 3 of your books in the top 10!!

That's it for the week in pictures. Have a lovely weekend and week ahead, all of you lovelies :)))

Question of the week

How old were you when your parents bought their first car?

  • Already had it when I was born
  • Before I turned 10
  • Between 10-18 yrs
  • Between 18-25 yrs
  • After I turned 25
  • Still do not have a car

(and see the results of others, too)

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...

I had to ask! When I met my current wife, Ruchi, at the age of 19 while in college, she was way out of my league! I was the super geeky and serious kid.I had strong notions about what is right and wrong.I was too uptight.I would even call myself sad at that point.Too serious. And took myself too seriously. She, on the other hand, was the Shahrukh Khan in everybody’s life.Happy and going with the flow :))Forever smiling.Everyone adored her.Her happiness made everyone else happy around her. We...

If it's just hard work, why wouldn't you do it? Our colony had the Tennis Singles Finals this morning. I lost. While I feel slightly bad about it, I am happy about 2 things: 1/ I didn't play it safe. I played aggressively and took my chances. It's another thing that most chances did not work out :)) But I tried! 2/ I know exactly where I went wrong and what I need to do to fix it. The distance between where I am and where I wish to be can be covered by hard work. You see, a lot of us are...
