I UNDERSTAND - IS A LIE!

I was at the Spoken Fest 2022 in Mumbai this Sunday and one gentleman asked me a very interesting and tough question.
"I have ADHD and I struggle to read books. I just can't. Your content talks a lot about reading books and whenever I come across that content piece I do not feel included. How should I deal with this?"

One, I admired the tone of the question.
It wasn't meant to accuse. Instead, to understand. Which is such a wonderful start.

I then went on to share my opinion.

If anyone ever tells you 'I understand', it is a lie.
NO ONE understands what you are going through.
NO ONE!
We can only empathize, or if we have gone through something similar, look at you through the lens of our own experience.
But we can never truly understand what you are going through.

Which means, it is not just unfair on the other person, it is also unfair on your own self, to expect someone else to understand you.

I do not have ADHD. I have no idea or appreciation of your struggles. I am in no capacity to even imagine what you must go through in life.
So I do not even know what it would mean to include you.
Because to include someone it needs to first identify what is missing.
I do not know what is missing.

So if you keep wanting and waiting for the world to include you, you are being unfair to yourself.
You are causing pain, feeling let down by the world and expecting them to understand.

Here is what you could consider.
Find your tribe. Your community.
Go on Facebook groups, Reddit - and find groups for ADHD.
In those groups lies someone who again, does not understand you, but has perhaps gone through a similar experience.
Someone who wants to read books but is unable to do so.
And when they share how they dealt with it, you will feel heard.
You will not feel alone.
You will not feel singled out.

My response isn't true for just ADHD.
It is true for life.
We often expect understanding, rarely recognizing that no one is capable of giving it.
We end up blaming them for it, which is unfair on them.
And then we end up blaming ourselves for being the way we are.
Which is unfair to us.

Instead realize that there are people who have gone through or are going through similar experiences.
And if they share how they managed, we would feel understood.
Because we would have understood ourselves, through them.

We have to understand that we can never be truly understood.
We can only be heard.

BOOK I AM READING THIS WEEK

Finished reading The YouTube Formula: How Anyone Can Unlock the Algorithm to Drive Views, Build an Audience, and Grow Revenue - good book to pick up if you want to go deep into the YouTube journey.

Started reading Binge Times: Inside Hollywood's Furious Billion-Dollar Battle to Take Down Netflix.

Fascinating business book detailing how the media and entertainment industry came to terms with the biggest pivot in the industry - streaming. With Netflix spearheading the movement.

My second book 'GET EPIC SHIT DONE' is now out.
1. It is NOT a sequel to Do Epic Shit. Both books are independent.
2. In GET EPIC SHIT DONE I answer 36 life questions narrated in a QnA format between a student and a teacher.

RESPONSES TO LAST WEEK'S QUESTION

Last week I asked you:

Which of these is the best part about your life right now?

  1. Your job/studies
  2. Your family
  3. Your friends
  4. Your love life
  5. Nothing is good about my life right now

Here are the responses:

Observations:

  • All you youngsters who feel that nothing is good about your life - be patient. It's not you. It's just the fact that you are early in the process.
  • Notice how "nothing is good" plummets as one grows in age :)
  • Family begins to add meaning (see how is grows).
  • Friendship comes back; your job/studies continue to enjoy some attention.

My response?
My family - hands down. It is such a joy to be sharing my life with them - nothing makes me happier.

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...

I had to ask! When I met my current wife, Ruchi, at the age of 19 while in college, she was way out of my league! I was the super geeky and serious kid.I had strong notions about what is right and wrong.I was too uptight.I would even call myself sad at that point.Too serious. And took myself too seriously. She, on the other hand, was the Shahrukh Khan in everybody’s life.Happy and going with the flow :))Forever smiling.Everyone adored her.Her happiness made everyone else happy around her. We...

If it's just hard work, why wouldn't you do it? Our colony had the Tennis Singles Finals this morning. I lost. While I feel slightly bad about it, I am happy about 2 things: 1/ I didn't play it safe. I played aggressively and took my chances. It's another thing that most chances did not work out :)) But I tried! 2/ I know exactly where I went wrong and what I need to do to fix it. The distance between where I am and where I wish to be can be covered by hard work. You see, a lot of us are...
