Is this what you do on a vacation?

Published about 1 month ago • 3 min read

There are 3 kinds of vacations

1) Where you do things in excess that you have done back at home as well.
Party, sleep, chill, dance, eat.
I call them escapes. Not vacations.
They are escapes from your current life.
Most vacations lie in this category.

2) Where you do things that you could have ONLY done where you have gone.
Sightseeing, top restaurants, top experiences.
These vacations are memories.
They are not a blur.
They are a moment.
Something you will remember and cherish for a while.
But they usually come with an agenda.
A plan.
A checklist.
These vacations, funnily enough, make you feel more tired than refreshed.

3) The ones that can only happen where you have gone.
But the ones you cannot plan for.
Walks, tours, culture, shopping, local immersions.
The ones where if you spend enough time, you forget your real life.
You become them, as against becoming you.
These vacations make you feel there is so much more to life than just the way you live it.

This week, we at wariCrew went for our 10th offsite to Phuket.
It was our first ever international offsite.
As we sat down to have dinner on the last night of the offsite, I asked around what were the highlights of the trip.
Almost everyone said - Scuba Diving (a first for many), the Cabaret show they went to (which was a unique experience for them) and game night (that we had on the second night).

And in this answer, all three vacations were immersed.
Game night - that we could have had anywhere, even in Faridabad.
Scuba Diving - that was unique to Thailand but planned for (and intense).
Cabaret - which was unique to Thailand, not planned, and left people mesmerized.

Wonderful vacation, I say! :)

Book I am reading this week

Finished reading The LEGO Story: How a Little Toy Sparked the World's Imagination by Jens Andersen.
The book lost its vibe somewhere towards the end. Would I read the book again? No. Did I enjoy it? Initially, yes. Would I recommend it? Only if you are a LEGO fan.

My new book, MAKE EPIC MONEY, is now a national bestseller, having sold 100,000+ copies in a record 40 days! Wow!

Here is a list of all the books I have shared in this newsletter so far (alphabetical order).

Results of last week's survey

Do you think your parents are proud of you?

  • Yes, they have said so
  • Yes. They haven't said so, but I know they are
  • No, I don't think they are proud of me
  • No, they have said they are not proud of me
  • My parents are no more / I am not in touch with them

Here are the results:

Observations:

  • There is only one observation - your parents ARE proud of you. It's just that you realise it much, much later in life.
  • Notice the "I don't think they are proud of me" trend - 38% when young and only 8% when old. This is a fact!
  • Don't kill yourself over this.

My answer:
I know my parents are proud of me :)
They have said so multiple times.

Quotes to share

People do what’s comfortable for them.
Not what’s right for you.

Don't stay married to your old goals, as you welcome a new you.

If your friends make you feel bad about growing, you are not a bad person for choosing your growth over them.

📸 My week, in pictures

In this section, I share my week in pictures, for those who do not like to read as much as I write :))
I do so not to show how cool a life I live, but instead to show you what are the highlights of every day. As you will see over time, my days are mostly in repeat mode - the same things, but different experiences from them.

Here are 7 random pics from our offsite this week :))

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...

I had to ask! When I met my current wife, Ruchi, at the age of 19 while in college, she was way out of my league! I was the super geeky and serious kid.I had strong notions about what is right and wrong.I was too uptight.I would even call myself sad at that point.Too serious. And took myself too seriously. She, on the other hand, was the Shahrukh Khan in everybody’s life.Happy and going with the flow :))Forever smiling.Everyone adored her.Her happiness made everyone else happy around her. We...

If it's just hard work, why wouldn't you do it? Our colony had the Tennis Singles Finals this morning. I lost. While I feel slightly bad about it, I am happy about 2 things: 1/ I didn't play it safe. I played aggressively and took my chances. It's another thing that most chances did not work out :)) But I tried! 2/ I know exactly where I went wrong and what I need to do to fix it. The distance between where I am and where I wish to be can be covered by hard work. You see, a lot of us are...
