YOU ARE SETTING GOALS THE WRONG WAY!

Elon Musk apparently once said:
Stop being patient and start asking yourself, 'how do I accomplish my 10 year plan in 6 months?'
You'll probably fail, but you'll be a lot further along than the person who simply accepted it was going to take 10 years.

This quote was most likely not said by Elon. But let's assume he did say it - kya farak padhta hai!
What is interesting is how you interpret this quote.

Some of you will take it the right way.
That a good way to grow in life is to challenge all set notions around what is possible and how.
Because, as Steve Jobs wonderfully said (and this time, he actually said it).
Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it - you can influence it, you can build your own things.

BUT, a lot of you are most likely going to mis-read Musk's quote.
What you will conclude is that you should get to your life's goals faster.
Which implicitly will hint to you that every goal in life, should have a timeline to it.

And the second you get to that point, you have made the cardinal mistake of setting goals.

Look around you.
Everyone is walking with some goal, some target, some destination in mind.
Finish your education by 22.
Get a job by 25.
Get married by 27.
Have kids by 30.
Buy a house by 35.
Get that fancy car, that vacation, that watch, that phone, that bank balance, that status, that position, that dream thing, by XX.

Goals.
And a timeline.
Target.
And a timeline.
A destination.
And a timeline.

And you know what happens because of that?
You are constantly under stress.
Not because you can't hit the target.
It is because you think you will not hit the target BY THAT TIMELINE.
It is NOT the actual goal that creates stress in our life, it is hitting that goal within that timeline that creates stress.

You know who are the happiest then?
Not the ones who do not have goals.
Not the ones who 'chill with no purpose'.
Not the ones who walk around aimlessly.

The happiest folks are the ones who have goals, have targets, and work towards a destination but do it without a timeline.
Their desire is to reach. Not reach by a certain time.
Because think about it - who are we to decide the timeline? What tells us that we know when it will happen?
Life is so random, and the world is so complex that it is quite crazy for us to assume that we will know.

I spoke about this on the Sandeep Maheshwari show - life is long and beautiful. And the worst thing we can do while setting goals is to set a deadline to achieve those goals.

Free yourself.
Live some!
Make some mistakes.
Give yourself time to recover.
Give yourself a life to live :)

DO EPIC SHIT - THE ULTIMATE MOTIVATIONAL ANTHEM

A great example of the above is what I did recently.
I always wanted to produce movies. I love movies.
But I didn't know when and how.
As it turns out, my first production is out now. It is not a movie but still is close to it.
A music video - DO EPIC SHIT!

I produced a music video in my life.
And you know what - on my deathbed, I will be able to say that.
It wouldn't matter that I did it at 42.
What will matter is that I did it :))

BOOK I AM READING THIS WEEK

I took a break from reading this week. Didn't read a single page. Wow!

My second book 'GET EPIC SHIT DONE' is now out.
1. It is NOT a sequel to Do Epic Shit. Both books are independent.
2. In GET EPIC SHIT DONE I answer 36 life questions narrated in a QnA format between a student and a teacher.
3. About 2K signed copies are left. Once over there will be no more signed copies available.

RESPONSES TO LAST WEEK'S QUESTION

Last week I asked you:

Do you believe in destiny? That everything is written beforehand?

  1. Yes
  2. No
  3. I am not sure

Here are the responses:

Observations:

  • FASCINATING. As people age, they begin to believe that there is something called destiny.
  • The way I explain it is that when we are young, we actually feel we control and influence things. That we are the masters of our life. We decide what we will do and how.
  • As life happens to us, we perhaps become jaded. Or we realize that despite all our best efforts, things take their own time and happen their own way.
  • To the extent that by the time we age, we look back at our life and think that was the way it was always meant to be!

My response?
I do not believe in destiny. I think we own our own life and are 100% responsible for what happens to us.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Throwback to the time when I dressed as a Kashmiri Pandit for the school fancy dress competition, and won 3rd prize! Which was mentioned in my resume, until I turned 22 haha :))

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...

I had to ask! When I met my current wife, Ruchi, at the age of 19 while in college, she was way out of my league! I was the super geeky and serious kid.I had strong notions about what is right and wrong.I was too uptight.I would even call myself sad at that point.Too serious. And took myself too seriously. She, on the other hand, was the Shahrukh Khan in everybody’s life.Happy and going with the flow :))Forever smiling.Everyone adored her.Her happiness made everyone else happy around her. We...

If it's just hard work, why wouldn't you do it? Our colony had the Tennis Singles Finals this morning. I lost. While I feel slightly bad about it, I am happy about 2 things: 1/ I didn't play it safe. I played aggressively and took my chances. It's another thing that most chances did not work out :)) But I tried! 2/ I know exactly where I went wrong and what I need to do to fix it. The distance between where I am and where I wish to be can be covered by hard work. You see, a lot of us are...
