MY FAVORITE QUESTION

Most of the emails I get on a daily basis have one word in common - confused.

I am confused what to do after school?
I am confused what to do during college?
I am confused which job to pick?
I am confused should I work in India or go abroad?
Should I do my master's or an MBA?
A full-time MBA or a distance MBA?
I am confused what should I do in life?
Where should I invest?

You get the drift.
I do not know what are people expecting.
That I will have the answer?
You want MY advice, on YOUR life, basis MY understanding of YOUR life, through YOUR email, that you have sent me 6 minutes back?
How cute :))

I do not have the answer.

But I do have a question, because I love questions :)
"What do you want to do?"

And I am fascinated with the responses I get.

"Oh I don't know which is the right choice to make"
"Oh I am so confused"
"I am scared that I will make the wrong decision"
"The world tells me this is the right path"

No!
You didn't get my question.
I am not asking what you SHOULD do.
I am asking what do you WANT to do?

We all know what we want to do.
Remember that filmy sounding Facebook forward...toss a coin and when it is in the air what your heart truly wants is what you truly what.
That thing is true! :)
We all know what we want to do.

We just don't have the courage to do it.
We think the probability of it working out is low.
We do not trust our own selves to follow it through.

But we all know what we want to do.

When I ask this question again, it suddenly brings about unexpected clarity.
Because it cuts through the noise. There is no longer any distraction. We are simply centered on what we want to do.

And then the next question makes it all come together.

Well, if this is what you want to do, what will make it happen for you?
As if your life depended on it?
Not a wish, not a desire. It is survival.
If the only way you could live, was to do the thing you always wanted to do but were scared to, you will find a way to do it!

Trust me on this!

10 HARSH TRUTHS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

This Friday, my twitter thread was on relationships and it seems to have touched a chord.

You can read it on Twitter, or on LinkedIn.

The truths are really harsh, so I wouldn't sample them here. Read them for yourself :)

BOOK I AM READING THIS WEEK

I am having such a ball of a time reading "University of Berkshire Hathaway" - which is basically a 30-year recap of the annual shareholder meeting of Berkshire Hathaway - the investment firm of Warren Buffet.

The wit of Buffet and Charlie Munger (his partner) is fascinating. And the clarity with which they went about their investing journey as well.

A great read for those who care about investing and would love a sneak peek into the brightest investing mind that we have seen in a long long time!

PS:
I also dismissed 3 books - not because they weren't good, but I couldn't relate to them right now. The books are well written though:
Kashmir: Exposing the Myth behind the Narrative
Coaching the Rajasthan Royals
Total Freedom: The Essential Krishnamurti

RESPONSES TO LAST WEEK'S POLLS

Last week I asked you all

For me, a sign of material success is:

  1. Having own house
  2. Going on frequent international vacations
  3. Having an expensive luxury car
  4. Wearing expensive clothes

I was frankly expecting the winner to be "own house". But surprisingly no.
Around 45% people replied "international vacation", followed by 30% own house, 20% luxury car and 5% expensive clothes.

I asked the same question on Twitter too, and house won by an overwhelming majority.

Think about it
If you met 2 people - one of them said, I own my own house and the other one said, I have been to several international vacations, we would mostly attribute "being rich" to the one who goes on vacations.

That's just the way we are hardwired.
Regular outflow of high expense items = wealth, for us!

We disregard one-time big investments.

Personally, I fall in the same category. For me, material success is frequent international vacations :)

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION

Why did you chose to do the bachelor's degree that you did or are doing or think you will be doing?

  1. Parents' choice
  2. Sibling's choice
  3. Relative's suggestion
  4. My own choice

But that doesn't mean we don't have a kasam today :)
As you all know, I read all my emails. So please do reply with your thoughts.
I read ALL my emails.

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...

I had to ask! When I met my current wife, Ruchi, at the age of 19 while in college, she was way out of my league! I was the super geeky and serious kid.I had strong notions about what is right and wrong.I was too uptight.I would even call myself sad at that point.Too serious. And took myself too seriously. She, on the other hand, was the Shahrukh Khan in everybody’s life.Happy and going with the flow :))Forever smiling.Everyone adored her.Her happiness made everyone else happy around her. We...

If it's just hard work, why wouldn't you do it? Our colony had the Tennis Singles Finals this morning. I lost. While I feel slightly bad about it, I am happy about 2 things: 1/ I didn't play it safe. I played aggressively and took my chances. It's another thing that most chances did not work out :)) But I tried! 2/ I know exactly where I went wrong and what I need to do to fix it. The distance between where I am and where I wish to be can be covered by hard work. You see, a lot of us are...
